Synopsis: A day after being defeated, Azula is officially declared insane and is sent to a mental hospital where she will under the watch every day, however under Zuko's orders, she will be rehabilitated and may redeem herself. While in her room at the mental hospital, she begins to feel redemption and begins to break down into tears by saying she's sorry for almost killing Avatar Aang, her brother, regrets everything she did with her father and letting down everyone she respected: her best friends Mai and Ty Lee and her mother Firelady Ursa. Meanwhile, Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph and Suki attend the coronation of Zuko as Firelord of the Fire Nation.

One year later, Azula has successfully been rehabilitated and is declared sane, therefore she is released due to good behaviour. While returning to the palace, she given an lukewarm reunion with Ty Lee and Mai, who abandoned her in "The Boiling Rock". She tells them the reason why she was insane, which was that she began to realise that her father Ozai was using her so that he would vapourise the Water Tribe and the Earth Kingdom.

Later Zuko arrives to see a redeemed Azula, something that he has not seen since their mother abruptly left. Azula tells Zuko that she's a changed person and apologises to him for almost killing him. Zuko then forgives her and tells Aang that Azula is now a good person and tries to allow her join the team, but he denies her membership, however Azula apologises to Aang for wounding him in the back, he then forgives her and Azula is welcomed to the team after she apologises to the team and they forgive her. Zuko the tells Azula that their mother still loves her and reveals that her hatred of their mother was all but a lie from their father.

While at his father's cell, Zuko tells his father about the current whereabouts of his mother. He responds that his mother is still alive and he framed her for the murder of his father, Firelord Azulon and as his act as Firelord, he banished her for the murder and treason, therefore she fled to the Fire Nation town Hira'a after she began to feel that she was responsible for the crime she did not commit and revealing that the framing was all part of his plan (mentioned in "The Day of the Black Sun, Part 2"). Later, Zuko tells his uncle Iroh that he would be taking a leave of absence so that he would find his mother. He then leaves the Fire Nation capital, joining with Team Avatar in a quest to find his mother.

Note:
  • This retcons "The Promise" and "The Search".
  • Also, this is the first appearance of the retconned canon, known as Earth-2. The name was used as a homage to the DC Universe.
  • This is the second time that Zuko tries to persuade Team Avatar to have Azula join the team, following "The Western Air Temple".
  • Jet is confirmed dead as Katara asked Smellerbee if Jet survived the ordeal in "Lake Laogai", when he was crushed by a boulder set by Long Feng, she responds with: "After you guys left in Lake Laogai, me and Longshot tried to wake up him but unfortunately when I checked his pulse, it was completely gone and therefore Jet died in the ordeal."
  • This is the second time that Azula appears without her lipstick, first being "The Awakening".
  • Sokka retains the same hairstyle from Book 3, as it's revealed that he outgrew his hair again after Sozin's Comet, Zuko asks him why decided not to shave the sides and the back of his hair again, Sokka responds with: "I'm fine with a full head of hair, I was a goof when I shaved parts of my hair."
  • Also, Sokka's staff appears for the first time after Book 2.
  • Also, Azula appears with her hair down for the majority of the episode.
  • Mai and Ty Lee appear with their hair down for the first time.
  • This episode confirms Azula's fate from "Sozin's Comet, Part 4" as it's revealed that she was sent into a mental hospital to control her behaviour and firebending powers.
  • From this episode onwards, Aang's voice breaks down to more mature voice, this is because that Aang has turned 13, therefore he has become a teenager. This is because his original voice actor, Zach Tyler Eisen had his voice changed after completing Book 3 and therefore he was replaced by Jesse McCartney to voice Aang prior to his voice breaking due to him voicing Dick Grayson / Robin in Young Justice. Ironically, McCartney was the original choice to play Prince Zuko in The Last Airbender. Matt Lanter voices Aang from this episode onwards.
  • Azula is the fifth character to find redemption preceding Iroh in "The Siege of the North, Part 2", Zuko in "Crossroads of Destiny" and "The Western Air Temple", Ty Lee and Mai in "The Boiling Rock, Part 2". Coincidentally, all of them are from the Fire Nation.
  • Also, Azula begins to realize her being evil was actually a brainwash and realize that her father never loved her in this episode, this is explained more in "Azula's Origins". This supports the theory by the creators that Azula was not born evil.
  • Opening line: "Take Princess Azula to the mental hospital", as told by one of the guards in the Fire Nation mental hospital (voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson).
  • Closing line: "Let's find my mother.", as told by Zuko (voiced by Dante Basco).
  • Song inspiration: "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails

Zuko asks the suspected person after her backstory, she tells him that she was married to a man who not supposed to be a ruler until his brother's son's death caused him become next in line and killed his own father, becoming the ruler. The man framed her and she fled without saying goodbye to her children. Zuko begins to realise that the third suspect none other than his mother. Azula then asks the lady to remove the hood. The woman then removes the hood, revealing to be Firelady Ursa.

Zuko and Azula finally reunite with Ursa. Ursa then asks Zuko what happened to his face while seeing his scar. Zuko tells her that it's a long story. After breaking up with Suki, Sokka becomes heartbroken, Katara tries to comfort him, but to no avail however Toph cheers him up by giving him a kiss to see what a real kiss look like.

The Team Avatar goes back to the Fire Nation palace, however they are seen by Zhao, revealing that his death (from "The Siege of the North") was a ruse and indeed survived the ordeal.

Note:
  • Combustion Man's real name is revealed as Cheng.
  • This is the only time that Toph kisses Sokka.
  • This episode is a loose adaptation of the second and third part of "The Search", however a majority of the plot is retconned.
  • This ends the speculation over a possible Tyzula pairing as it's revealed that Azula may have a crush on Sokka as evidence in the quote: "Zuzu, I think I might have a crush on the wolf tailed dude", referring to Sokka.
  • This marks the first canonical appearance of the ring-tailed flying lemur, the species would make its first Earth-1 appearance in Avatar: The Legend of Korra Book 2: Spirits.
  • Zhao is confirmed to be alive, as evidenced by the final scene.
  • "The Beach" is referenced in the episode when Azula tells Zuko that she was over-zealous after kissing Chan at Ember Island and told him that they would be the strongest couple in the Fire Nation, which Zuko later responds that he was heartbroken at Ember Island but reconciled. Azula would later tell Zuko that she regrets vandalising the house.

9. "Legends"
Synopsis: An Earth Kingdom native named Lian begins to trap people by using her earthbending powers and stealing their possessions. Team Avatar arrive at Omashu finding out who set the traps, but they are too trapped. After being trapped, the team find a plan to free themselves with Toph using her metalbending powers to break free. Meanwhile, Lian discusses with Ozai to capture his children in order to regain his powers. With this, she begins to pilot an abandoned Fire Nation tanker.

While trapped, Aang tells Zuko about how the legendary Air Nomad Yi Lin stopped the rebels from ever invading Omashu. The story shifts to several hundred years ago, where the rebels begin to demolish the walls of Omashu and vandalises the cave of two lovers. Luckily Yi Lin who was at Omashu, bravely defeated the rebels and became a honourary citizen of Omashu. With this, the new walls of Omashu was built and in response the walls of Ba Sing Se was built. After the story finished, Toph frees the team by using her metal bending powers.

After freeing themselves, Team Avatar free the other people who too have been trapped as well, including Onji, who is on holiday at Earth Kingdom. After this, they try to stop Lian, but they're too late as Lian forces Aang to go in the Avatar State, which he refuses to do so. With this, Zuko attempts to burn the tanker, but the metal on the tanker is indestructible. Then, Katara uses her bloodbending powers to stop Lian and uses her waterbending powers to cut through the metal, with Toph finally crushing it with boulders.

Soon after that Team Avatar confront Lian, but she puts an explosive on the boulders so that Team Avatar will be crushed alongside Zuko and Azula being depowered by their own father. However the team escape and the boulders blow up. This leaves Lian for dead when she gets buried in boulders, apparently killing her.

The team then leave Omashu by Appa to the Fire Nation capital. After they leave, Lian frees herself, revealing that her death is a ruse and vows revenge on Team Avatar.

10. "The Uprisings"
Synopsis: Ozai begins an attack on the Fire Nation palace, where he will regain his powers from his children. Meanwhile, Zuko experiences nightmares of him being buried in ash, the same fate like his maternal great-grandfather Roku. He consults his uncle Iroh about his nightmares. Iroh responds to him that he has suffered from post-battle stress disorder, a condition that he had after throwing his Blue Spirit mask into the water (referring to "Lake Laogai").

At an abandoned Fire Nation ship, Ozai tells the Elite Avatar to capture his children. At the palace, Aang asks Zuko about the nightmares he had, he responds to him that he was haunted by the death of his grandfather Azulon at the hands of his father and is worried that him and Azula will be captured to regain his own powers. After this, he consults with Suki to have her and the Kyoshi Warriors protecting him, which she agrees.

The next day, Katara, Toph and Azula are captured by their elite counterparts, while Zhao captures Sokka, Hahn and Haru. This leaves Aang, Zuko, Ty Lee, Suki, Mai and Teo are the only Team Avatar members not captured. The Kyoshi Warriors then protects the palace from Long Feng and the Dai Li entering, but they are eventually stopped by the Dai Li. Then Ursa tries to stop Long Feng, but she is knocked out.

The Dai Li arrive at the throne room, where Long Feng asks Zuko to abdicate his throne for his father or one of his henchmen will kill Mai. Zuko refuses neither choice and is given the third choice - he will give out his firebending to his father, which he refuses but is forced to do so as he is injected by a chemical that will knock him out. While Zuko is unconscious, Ozai regains his firebending powers from his son and then regains more from Azula. During this time, the other six Team Avatar members are freed.

After waking up, Zuko realises that the palace is now surrounded by the Elite Avatar and tells Team Avatar to leave the palace at once as his father is now back in power. With this, Team Avatar alongside with Momo, Appa, Iroh and Ursa, then leave the palace as they go on a unknown location. During the journey, Zuko tells the team that they're doomed.

  • Last appearance of the Elite Avatar team until "Journey's End".
  • When Zuko describes his father, he says "Like a beast of blood", a reference to the Malice Mizer song "Beast of Blood".

  • Zuko's nightmares is a homage to Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
  • Opening line: "Today is the day to end my son's reign.", as told by Ozai (voiced by Mark Hamill).

  • Song inspiration: "Ride" by The Vines
This is my continuation of Avatar: The Last Airbender titled "Book 4: Aftermath". It is a retcon series, ignoring The Promise, Rebound, The Search and The Rift.

PD is short for "plot details", BTW.

The retconned canon will be called "Earth-2" as a homage to the DC Universe.

Plus I've resolved Azula's fate and Ursa's fate and also I decided to retcon Zhao, Hahn and Kya's deaths because this is the retconned canon, not the main canon. Also I added song inspirations of my Book 4 as a part of a "soundtrack".

UPDATE (31-07-2013): Added a mention of my fanfic on TVTropes: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php…

UPDATE (12-08-2013): Due to the huge amount of fanfiction, I have exceeded the intended size. So I have cut the series into two parts.
