After the Cybermen are finally destroyed, the Eighth Doctor and his companion Destrii travel to another world via Tardis. However, the Doctor collapses on the floor after being exposed to the Time Vortex that destroyed the Cybermen.
He tells Destrii that he's regenerating, but Destrii doesn't know about this until the Doctor tells her that when a Time Lord or a Time Lady succumbs, they regenerate into a new form. Before he regenerates, he wishes her good luck meeting his next regeneration. After this, as witness by his companion, he regenerates to a new, slightly younger form - the Ninth Doctor.
After regenerating to a new form, the Ninth Doctor then checks his new look and changes his suit to more casual clothes followed by a black leather jacket. After changing to new clothes, the new Doctor asks Destrii if she would like to continue serving as his companion. The alien politely declines, saying she preferred his previous incarnation.
After this, the Tardis lands at Destrii's home planet Oblivion where she gives the Doctor a farewell kiss, saying to him that she will always remember him and the Doctor then tells her that she is always welcome to the Tardis. After this, the two part ways and the Doctor leaves Oblivion alone.
While piloting the Tardis, the Doctor receives a distress call that the Autons are back to terrorise London, which he responds by saying: "Here I go again."

This is my first Doctor Who fanfic and it serves as an epilogue to the 2004-2005 Eighth Doctor "The Flood" story arc from Doctor Who Magazine and a prequel to the first revival episode "Rose".
It could be considered as What Could Have Been since there is a regeneration of Eighth Doctor to Ninth Doctor in this fanfic (although there is an aborted scene from the story arc where the regeneration took place and the Eighth Doctor's companion Destrii would become the next Doctor's companion until the Ninth Doctor: Year One story arc but it was scrapped by BBC Wales as they decided that the Ninth Doctor would only be accompanied by Rose Tyler).
UPDATE (21-11-2013): This is now an AU since the Eighth Doctor has finally regenerated in the mini-episode "The Night of the Doctor" but into the War Doctor, who has a major role in the upcoming 50th anniversary special.
